Artist Statement

[redacted] until proven [redacted] is a large-scale typographic installation that confronts the inequities and contradictions of the American political and judicial systems. Composed of three rows of laser-cut wooden letters painted black, the work redacts its first and third rows, leaving only the words “until proven” visible—echoing the visual language of censorship in official documents.

The arrangement of the text evokes the triple bar or tribar symbol, a form often associated with equivalence and the interplay of dualities. Here, it serves as a critique of a system where innocence and guilt appear indistinguishable when applied to those in positions of power. The piece reflects the frustration and disillusionment that emerged following the end of the first Trump presidency when glaring disparities in accountability underscored a two-tiered system of justice.

By presenting a statement simultaneously obscured and incomplete, the installation invites viewers to confront what remains unsaid and unseen in the pursuit of justice. It serves as a call to question how power reshapes truth and how inequities are masked by the very structures meant to ensure fairness. This piece channels anger into reflection, challenging us to examine the deeper implications of the systems we inherit and uphold.
