Artist Statement
Refute is a site-specific installation that immerses visitors in a space of tension and contemplation. Set within a small, enclosed 5x5 room, the piece features an ornate black chair, its back initially turned to the visitor, surrounded by flowing white cloth that covers the walls and pools onto the floor. Dark, jagged branches emerge from the fabric, becoming increasingly dense as they climb toward the ceiling. A single light from above illuminates the room, casting sharp contrasts and shadows that heighten the atmosphere of unease and introspection.
The installation invites visitors to confront the dualities of comfort and discomfort, invitation and rejection. The chair—ornate yet turned away—challenges the viewer to decide whether to engage with the space fully by sitting or to remain an observer. The fabric suggests softness and purity, but the encroaching branches disrupt that tranquility, evoking themes of resistance, entanglement, and the inevitability of confrontation.
Through Refute, I explore the complexities of personal and societal conflict, the urge to escape versus the need to face, and the layered meanings of defiance. The work asks viewers to reflect on their own thresholds for comfort, vulnerability, and resolution within spaces that challenge and provoke.
